All incoming J-1 students with initial DS-2019 are required to pay a one-time fee of $220 when applying for an exchange student visa. J-2 dependents do not have to pay the fee.
The fee must be paid at least 3 business days prior to your visa interview or when applying for admission at a United States port-of-entry. Students who do not require a J-1 visa (e.g. Canadian students) should bring their SEVIS fee payment receipt and present it at the port-of-entry along with their DS-2019.
The fee must be paid to the Department of Homeland Security online or by mail. It can be paid by you or by a third party, inside or outside the U.S.
